Cultural Travel to Asheville, N.C.

I have been a cultural traveler all of my life. As an artist, I have traveled the world in search of people who create material objects that we, in the west call art. I made my living creating and exhibiting figurative fabric sculpture all over the world for 30 years. I explored Turkey, Nepal, Thailand, Brazil, England, Spain and numerous other places in search of the “makers.” When I moved to the mountains of North Carolina, in 1991, I knew that they held a certain power over me in the sense of their extreme beauty and wonder.

Twenty two years later, everyone has discovered the mountains of N. C. and no longer are these hills the best kept secret. It seems that people always find beautiful places. In Asheville, we have the Vanderbilts to thank for their vision and wealth to create the “Biltmore Estate.”  The story is extraordinary, and without the Vanderbilts, people like Picasso, Hemmingway, the Fitzgeralds, and other artists at the turn of the 20th century would have not come to Asheville. The Vanderbilts built the railroad that gave access to the mountains of N.C. Other amazing creations in this area include the Blue Ridge Parkway which is a road that extends for hundreds of miles along a ridgetop. This is amazing because the people who pioneered this project were a part of the WPA project. Many lost their lives because to build a road through the mountains requires a lot of blasting and a lot of tunnels. If you have never been to the N.C. mountains, you really must go. This is a cultural experience that has everything that a cultural traveler searches for.
